Thorpeness was built from scratch as a holiday village in the early 1900’s by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie, a wealthy Scottish barrister. His love for mock Tudor and Jacobean architecture is very evident in the village today with a host of quirky buildings, notably the famous ‘House in the Clouds’.

Thorpeness features a village green, a hotel and golf club, and a 3-acre boating lake known as The Meare with landings based on a Peter Pan theme.

The annual Thorpeness Regatta takes place each August with a celebration of live music and food. A parade of lit boats float out onto the Meare at dusk followed by fireworks later in the evening.
