Dunwich was the capital of the Kingdom of the Eastern Angles during Anglo-Saxon times. Much of the historic town is now beneath the waves after storm surges in the 13th and 14th centuries and legend has it that the sound of Dunwich’s lost churches can still be heard at certain tides.
This remaining small village is popular with both locals and visitors to the Suffolk Heritage Coast. The population of the ancient town of Dunwich was once in the thousands but today it numbers fewer than 100, so property is at a premium.
The Ship, a short walk from the beach, is a popular award-winning inn serving quality homemade food and fine ales. It was a one-time haunt for smugglers landing their ill-gotten gains but now offers a comfortable bed for the night.
Dunwich lies on the border of Dunwich Heath, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is just a short walk along the beach from RSPB Minsmere.
